Wahkiakum Autism Awareness Charity Walk kicks off Saturday

This Saturday’s (April 26) Wahkiakum Autism Awareness charity walk is set to be the event of the year, pinning our local heroes against each other, all in the name of helping generate Autism awareness and funds to support children with special needs within our community. Initiated by Puget Island Fire Department’s Paul Lawrence, the challenge was set to race in full gear against any other willing participant. Not one to shy away from a challenge or a good cause, Sheriff John Mason threw his hat into the race as well as two courageous deputies, Jeremy Jordan and Lucas Getman, will also be racing in their full gear. Next to enter was the entire Cathlamet Fire department, who have pledged to give Mr. Lawrence and the deputies a highly competitive race. The race starts at 11 a.m. at the Wahkiakum High School Track. Bring the whole family and discover who will be crowned the one-mile champion.

Before the race starts, pop into the concessions stand and check out the bake sale. Decadent delights from the best bakers in the county will be available for purchase, with all proceeds donated to the school. Award-winning bakers from the county fair, Cathlamet Women’s Club and the Puget Island Firefighters Auxiliary have all come together to sell their best home-baked treats. This is one sale your sweet tooth will not want to miss.

This year, the volunteers have been blown away by the support from our community, especially from local businesses. Organized by Beth Jordan, our first ever silent auction is filled with amazing prizes. including a deluxe spa basket from Cathlamet Pharmacy, two $15 gift cards from Patty Cakes, two pizzas and a sub sandwich voucher from JJ’s Pizza & Mohr, a $25 gift card and WAA branded tumbler and mug from Gragg’s General Store, a dozen cupcakes from the Sugar Pearl Bakery, and two branded mugs from Backman Fish. All prizes will be held at the concession stand for bidding during the race.

Join us on Saturday for some good old fashioned family fun, delicious treats and fantastic prizes, while helping us raise awareness and generate funds for children on the Autism spectrum and those with special needs within our community. Together, we can make a real difference.
