Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Skamokawa News

NICE BEGINNING. As this week begins, it’s a sunny Sunday following a fairly chilly evening and a foggy start, but boy, is it nice to see the sunshine. Better yet, our forecast looks dry for the entire week, so now we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it stays this way. I know the folks organizing Easter Egg Hunts, as well as those dressing in their Sunday best to get to church, would love to see some lovely, dry, sunny days this coming weekend. It would also be great for those who enjoy being out in their yards and sprucing them up a bit, as, right now, everything looks a tad soggy and unattractive. Here’s to enjoying the sun!

Those celebrating birthdays this coming week from April 17 through 24 are Randy Voight, Linda Mahitka, Esther Mendez, Charly Childers, Andrei Hoven, Mike Brown, Poppy Hammons, Griffin Hammons, Tawnya Paine, Juniper Moffite, Alexander Adams, Darci Francis, Jennifer Oxley, Peter Vik, Kassidy Holland, Jaime Cotter, Lisa Cothren, Frank Chandler, Curtis Bear, Max Schmitz, Kinsley Corrie, Troy Sorenson, Eric Bergseng, Reagyn Watkins, Nick Moffite, Susan Kuhn, Macie Helms-Masterson, Jarid Vik, Bonnie Bassi, Nathan Kincaid, Jeri Terpsma Pierce, Gwen Ronninghaug, Sue Edminster, Joel Peterson, Olive Zickefoose and 67’ers Sandra Davis and Greg Lloyd. EASTER IN SKAMOKAWA. Once again, it’s time to head down to our Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds and take part in a dual Easter egg hunt and carnival. The fun all happens this Saturday, April 19. There will be a carnival and a couple of egg hunts between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. However, the Wahkiakum Lion’s Club egg hunt begins promptly at 11 a.m., so don’t be late! The WLC hunt has three different age limits: 0 to 3 years, 4 to 7, and 7 to 11. The Fair Foundation also has an egg hunt that starts promptly at 1 p.m. and has no age limits. All of you can come down and take part in this one. Remember, there will be food, fun, and games. It’s time to party at the fairgrounds this Saturday at 16 Fairgrounds Road.

GFWC CELEBRATION-CWC. The Cathlamet Woman’s Club is proud to celebrate 95 years of community service. To recognize this momentous occasion, there will be an Open House at the Cathlamet Community Center on Wednesday, April 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) is one of the oldest and largest women’s service organizations dedicated to community improvement through volunteer services (organized in 1929 and federated in 1930), and we have certainly enjoyed and appreciated all that our local chapter, CWC, has done for us. So, if you’d like to learn more about this group and join them, please attend this celebration on Wednesday and enjoy some refreshments while they celebrate their ninety-fifth year of service to us! A big thank you to Caroline Walton for letting me know about this event.

ALMOST FOS TEA TIME. I hope you have called Redmen Hall/River Life Interpretive Center and made those reservations for their third annual Spring Tea on May 3 from 1 to 3 p.m .; the cost is $35 per person. Call today: 360-795-3007.

INDOOR SPRING BAZAAR IN SKAMOKAWA. If you are a vendor of any kind and want to show off your craft or you have goods to resell, now is your chance to head down here to the Skamokawa Vista Park Annex and join them for an indoor spring bazaar on May 10. You may know the new Skamokawa Vista Park office as the old Skamokawa Methodist Church, which is located just to the left as you enter Skamokawa Vista Park. More info: 360-795-8605 or terina@wahport2.org

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT. On Saturday, April 26, at 5 p.m., the Saint James Family Center gym will be the place to be. They will be showing “Moana 2,” which I’m sure the kids would love to see. It’s free for SJFC families and $5 for nonmembers. There will be hotdogs, popcorn, and other treats for just a buck, so head that way on April 26.

SYMPATHIES. We want to extend our sincere sympathies to Judy Bates on the loss of her beloved husband, George. George passed away recently at the age of 83. His Celebration of Life services will be held on May 17 at 1 p.m. at the Heritage Bible Church (193 North Welcome Slough Road. For us old timers, that was the little Lutheran Church). We want to send our deepest condolences to all of his family members as well, as we know they were near and dear to his heart. RIP George.

BIG FAMILY EVENT. As you all know by now, I’m a proud grandma, and I like to brag a bit about my grandkids. Please indulge me once again as I spread the latest good news regarding my only grand-daughter: On March 22, Miss Tessa Jane Sechler became Bobby Graham’s wife in a beautiful wedding ceremony at the Fox Hollow Farm venue in Issaquah, WA. It was truly a magical day. The night before, it was pouring rain, and everyone was a bit concerned that we would get soaked on the wedding day, but the weather gods smiled upon the happy couple, and the sunshine came out after all.

Tessa looked gorgeous in her wedding gown, resembling a princess in a fairy tale. Her groom looked exceptionally handsome and dashing in his tux, and all the lovely gals and handsome guys in the wedding party looked great. Two of the groomsmen were Tessa’s brothers, Kyle and Luke. Her other brother, Blake, officiated the wedding and made the special day even more memorable. After the lovely service, everyone entered a building called The Barn to enjoy live cello music and beverages while visiting. The kids enjoyed a special play area while the grownups enjoyed various yard games and the photo shoot trailer. Then, it was time to head into the massive reception tent, and the newlyweds shared their first dance as husband and wife to “Beauty and The Beast,” accompanied by the live cello. It was lovely and even brought a few tears to this grandma’s eyes! The newlyweds sat together under an arbor made by Tessa’s dad, Pete, and decorated with a massive number of gorgeous flower arrangements by Tessa’s sister-in-law, Suzy. The groom gave a heartfelt speech, leading us to toast the happy couple.

For the father-daughter dance, Tessa had slipped away to change her dress. As she stood on the dance floor before her dad, Pete, in her mother’s wedding dress, originally worn by the late Sally Nolan, three generations had now worn the dress. It was a truly special moment when her dad realized what his daughter was wearing! It was simply fantastic... and again with the tears! Towards the end, the married couple posed for pictures in front of a fabulous 1957 black and silver Rolls Royce, which exuded class and elegance, perfectly fitting for a couple who had just married in a fairy tale. To end the day, the couple was sent off amid an array of streamers and cheers, wished all the best by family and friends as they began their lives together as Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Graham. Cheers... may they live happily ever after!
