George Edward Bates Sr. "Pa"

George Edward Bates Sr., lovingly known as "Pa," passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, in Vancouver, WA, at the age of 83. Born on September 19, 1941, in Albany, California. George lived a life defined by service, love and an unwavering sense of self.

George's journey began with his service in the U.S. Navy as an electrician, followed by his enlistment in the Army National Guard. His dedication to duty continued throughout his career as a correctional officer for the state of California, where he made a lasting impact before retiring. Never one to sit still, he later found joy in driving a school bus for Wahkiakum County, ensuring the next generation always had a safe journey ahead.

Above all, George was a devoted family man. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, George Bates Jr., and he carried that loss with quiet strength. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Bates; his daughter, Virginia Bates; his grandchildren, Justin, Sarah and Jeff; his great-grandchildren, Ryan, Bella, Paige, Jordan, Hailey, Kayla and Joshua; and his great-great-grandchildren, Grant and Cassidy. He also leaves behind cherished family members, Kandice and Kara, who were close to his heart.

George's passions were simple but deeply meaningful-his family, his cars and his love for firearms. He was a quiet man with sharp words, and whether or not you thought he came off wrong, it was his way of showing hard love. He believed in strength, resilience and honesty, never sugarcoating his words but always standing by those he loved in his own way.

With honor, respect and gratitude, we say goodbye. Fair winds and following seas. "Don't be sad, be happy. I am happy! Love you all!" (Psalms 142). Pa-your watch is over, but your legacy lives on.

In honoring George's wishes, his family asks that instead of mourning, we celebrate his life with the same joy and love that he shared with us all. His presence will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
