Clatskanie softball bounces back with close win

Just when the Clatskanie girls softball team was rebounding from one loss, they suffered their second and third at the hands of Washington's Mark Morris and Astoria. Giving up 12 runs over the first two innings last Tuesday, April 1, against Mark Morris, the Tigers scored three unanswered runs in the top of the third and fourth. However, Mark Morris answered with 7 to put the game out of reach. The Tigers mustered up a single run in the top of the fifth, but the game was called due to the mercy-run rule, and Mark Morris celebrated the 19-4 victory. Senior Karielle Carlson had the lone RBI of the day for the Tigers, and junior Kyrielle White led the team with two runs scored in the loss. As a team, the Tigers were held to only two hits.

The Tigers lost their second game in a row Friday, April 4, falling 8-1 at Astoria. Facing a 7-0 deficit going into the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers got their lone run of the game thanks to one of Emma Parmley's two hits, which scored junior Joey Sizemore. Carlson, Sizemore and sophomores Adalyn Wemmer and Olivia George were the only other Clatskanie batters with a hit, with those from Carlson and George going for extra bases.

Staving off a possible three-game losing streak, the Tigers returned home Saturday, April 5 to take on Salem Academy. A four-run first inning provided a jolt for Clatskanie, as the Crusaders inched back in the third and fifth innings to bring the score to 4-3 Clatskanie. The Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-3 lead. Salem Academy would add another run in the top of the seventh inning, but would fall short in its rally as Clatskanie hung on for the 6-4 victory. Sizemore and George had two RBI each for the Tigers and combined for four of the six runs scored. White and sophomore Payton Taylor knocked in a run each, and Parmley and Wemmer scored once each to account for the remaining Clatskanie runs.

The Tigers (6-3) will host Warrenton this Saturday at 1 p.m. and will travel to Drain to take on North Douglas Monday, April 14 before returning Tuesday, April 15, to face Regis at 4:30 p.m.
