Wahkiakum High School’s Key Club is launching Doernbecher Days this week, a month-long series of events aimed at raising funds for children in need of medical care at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Club President Parker Leitz energized the K-12 student body at an all-school assembly and encouraged participation with the rallying cry, “Helping students make miracles.”
Each year, similar fundraising efforts contribute to the $11 million raised for Doernbecher Children's Hospital. According to Key Club member Sam De La Cruz, this year, Wahkiakum students have set an ambitious goal of $6,000.
The fundraising kicks off with a coin drive, where the winning classes at each level will be rewarded with an ice cream party. Another exciting event this week was movie night in the high school on Wednesday, April 2. Admission was by donation, and concessions were available.
On Friday, April 4, students and community members can enjoy root beer and orange cream soda floats while in class, with proceeds benefiting the cause. A dodgeball tournament will take place on April 16, with teams of six competing for a $5 per player entry fee.
The highly anticipated Wahkiakum’s Got Talent show is also on the schedule. Tryouts are set for April 15 at 6:30 p.m., with a dress rehearsal on April 23 and the main event on April 25 at 7 p.m.
Rounding out the month of activities is a spaghetti and alfredo dinner with an auction on April 18 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $25.
The Key Club, led by Parker Leitz, Sam DeLaCruz, Memphis Coleman, Evy Hogue, and May Casey, is working tirelessly to ensure the success of this fundraiser. They encourage everyone in the community to get involved and help them reach their $6,000 goal in support of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
