Introducing Appelo Archive Center's new Director, Angela Metcalf
It is a privilege to introduce Angela Metcalf as the new Executive Director of the Appelo Archives Center in Naselle. Angela grew up in Cathlamet and is an alumnus of Wahkiakum High School. She met her husband, Brandon, on a blind date, and after their marriage, she moved to Naselle 18 years ago. They have two daughters; their oldest attends Naselle School, while the youngest is being homeschooled by Angela. Her father was a logger and was included in the book "When Logging Was Logging."
Before officially joining AAC, Angela volunteered at various events. Two years ago, she began working part-time, assisting the former director and helping in the café. In December 2024, Angela was selected as the new director after Annika Kay resigned.
Since starting her new position, the museum and café have extended their hours to Tuesday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thanks to a generous grant from the Templin Foundation, the heating system in the café and the logger's room has been upgraded. Previously, the inadequate system made the Center quite cold during the winter months. Now, patrons can enjoy a much cozier environment while savoring their morning coffee or a delicious lunch.
One of her goals is to continue the efforts of previous directors by creating an online database for the historical photos currently stored in albums and making them available for purchase. Another project involves digitizing oral history recordings currently on cassette tapes. Additionally, several of the museum's exhibits are receiving fresh updates. One significant improvement is transitioning the veteran's memorial corner from a seasonal display to a permanent fixture located upstairs.
I asked her what she was most excited about as the director. She replied, "I had a project where I searched for all the railroad logging pictures I could find. That was really fun, as I got to explore the stories surrounding that piece of history. One of the enjoyable aspects of this job is assisting people with their research and projects. We have many valuable resources here and knowledgeable individuals I can reach out to."
The Center is expanding its offerings by making available additional spaces for event rentals suitable for meetings and parties. For further information, Angela is available for in-person inquiries on Thursdays; otherwise, you may reach her via email at info@appeloarchives.org.
The Appelo Archives Center is dedicated to encouraging the study of region-wide history by preserving collections, sponsoring community and educational activities, facilitating genealogical research, and fostering Scandinavian studies, emphasizing Finnish-American heritage. Their annual events include the Finnish Midsummer Tea Party in June, a Finn Festival Celebration in July, the Loggers Reunion in August, and the annual Harvest Auction in October.
Johnson Park Community Center Open House
The Open House on Saturday was an enjoyable and informative afternoon, where attendees learned about the numerous activities and services available at the community center. I obtained my free library card from the Cathlamet Public Library, perused the book sale, and took home an information packet outlining the benefits of membership. I toured the building, which included the extensive library, various activity and exercise rooms, and other spaces. I even discovered an old band picture from 1954 hanging on the wall that featured my mom. As usual, I ran into several neighbors and friends in the hallways as we each explored the facility. It was a fun afternoon!
