The Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board held its monthly meeting on March 18. During public comment, Luke Gardner read a prepared statement expressing his concerns. Gardner stated, “I have asked this administration if they could inform me of any policy that regulates advertising or promoting opinions about political figures and displaying such on or about the school… As everyone in this room is probably well aware, there became a controversy over the appropriateness of a particular pin-up board in the elementary hall… It would be really nice to develop some language in a board policy to address this issue.” The board cannot comment on or respond to statements made during public comment in the meeting.
CTE and Shop teacher Jim Moten and several of his students gave a presentation on the topics they have been studying throughout the year, focusing on Agricultural Education. Mr. Moten introduced a Farm to Table class, where students learned about the production of various products and animals and the economic impacts on the community and the state. The students also had the opportunity to prepare dishes using the products they studied. Several of these dishes were prepared for the board meeting and shared with everyone in attendance. The offerings included dehydrated apples, peanut butter fudge, Rice Krispie treats, and bacon-wrapped sweet and jalapeño peppers.
Superintendent Lisa Nelson reported that the enrollment for March stands at 308 students. She sought the board’s approval to request a waiver concerning the missed school days in February. Although the school has met the required instructional hours, it has fallen short in total days (175 days instead of 180). Given that the instructional hours have been satisfied, a waiver can be requested to avoid making up these days; the board approved the decision to move forward with the waiver request.
Several Personnel actions were approved, along with the 2025 surplus list and the 2025-2026 school calendar. The surplus items, no longer needed by the school, will first be available for purchase by Washington schools in mid-April, with the remaining items available to the public on June 4. The list of items can be found at http://www.naselleschools.org.
A budget workshop is scheduled for March 29 at 3 p.m. in the school library. The community is encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be held on April 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. Meetings are also available via Zoom.
