On Monday, March 10, the American Legion in Clatskanie celebrated its 106th birthday. Local veterans were able to come together to talk, eat, and enjoy the event. Jerry Simmons gave an award from the Department of Oregon to Roger Jolma for being a member of the American Legion for 50 years.
Around 45 people attended this birthday celebration. The legion’s auxiliary (Louis Larsen Unit #68) served spaghetti, green beans, corn, salad, rolls, and cake. The group sang some patriotic songs to end the celebration.
Being a part of the American Legion is an opportunity not only for veterans who have served this country for a common cause but for those who struggle to come together and help each other. On Saturday, March 15, Louis Larsen Unit #68 dropped off a St. Patrick’s Day gift basket for the residents at the Amber, an assisted living senior community in Clatskanie. Amber residents include veterans, as well as family members of veterans. The auxiliary plans to give gift baskets for the different holidays throughout the year to Amber residents.
