My column is brief this week because we returned from a 7-day cruise to Mexico on Saturday to celebrate my 50th birthday. It was a fantastic week spent lounging in the sun and enjoying much-needed downtime. Unfortunately, on the day we traveled home, I came down with a bad cold and was laid up in bed.
In the coming weeks, I will continue my series on the Department of Health and Human Services. I will also feature a spotlight on the Appelo Archives Center, introducing its new director, Angela Metcalf. I wanted to highlight two events happening in the West End this weekend:
On Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m., the Grange is hosting a movie night featuring the film The Dark Divide. This film is based on the memoir Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide by Grays River resident Robert Pyle and stars David Cross and Debra Messing. Freshly popped popcorn and beverages will be served during the event. Admission is free; however, donations are appreciated to benefit the Grays River Grange.
Also, on that Saturday, the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation will host a lasagna dinner at Rosburg Hall from noon to 4 p.m. Dinner is being offered for a donation. A bake sale and silent auction will also be held to help raise funds for the foundation.
