The Clatskanie girls basketball team saw their season-high eight-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday night on the road at Astoria's Knappa High School. Avenging their 47-44 loss from Jan. 21 against the Tigers in Clatskanie, the Knappa Loggers had a statement 41-27 home win Tuesday. The loss was only the second for the Tigers, who fell to 10-2 in 2A Northwest League play. As a result of the game, Knappa, now 11-1 in league play, leapfrogged Clatskanie in the standings. "Knappa played well," said Clatskanie Coach Dawn Warren. "Their shots were falling and ours weren’t. We were flat tonight, and Knappa capitalized on it as any good team would."
The loss was the first for the girls since Nestucca eked out a 29-28 win at home on Jan. 13, a loss that was avenged by the girls on Jan. 31 in Clatskanie. "We have to put that behind us because we’ve got our next game on Thursday," said Warren of Tuesday's loss.
Last Friday, the girls achieved their eighth straight win against Gaston. The Tigers were led in scoring by sophomore Lacey Willis, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds, representing the girls' only double double of the night. Sophomore Olivia George had 11 rebounds and nine points, and junior Joey Sizemore led the team with four blocked shots and five assists to go along with her four points and eight rebounds. Junior Mya Jensen had what Coach Warren described as a "great defensive night," leading the team with 13 deflections and three steals.
The Tigers (16-5) will look to rebound Thursday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Aloha to take on Faith Bible Christian. They will return Friday, Feb. 14 to take on Portland's Columbia Christian at 6 p.m. inside the Clatskanie High School gym. The girls will then travel to Portland Saturday, Feb. 15 to take on City Christian.
