The Clatskanie girls basketball team has won seven straight and 13 out of 14 since opening the season with a 2-3 record. The team's 9-1 record in 2A Southwest have them in first place following last week's home wins against Vernonia and Nestucca.
Last Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Tigers, despite trailing Vernonia 18-13 going into halftime, outscored the Loggers 16-4 in the second half, allowing only 2 points each in the third and fourth quarter. Clatskanie was led in scoring by sophomore Olivia George, who managed 10 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field. Junior Joey Sizemore led the team in three categories, pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out six assists, and managing four steals for the Tigers. Sizemore, along with George and sophomores Lacey Willis and Payton Taylor, all got one block each in the 29-22 win.
The streak would hit seven Friday, Jan. 31 with visiting Nestucca of Cloverdale. The Tigers jumped out early, outscoring the Bobcats 11-2 in the first quarter. Nestucca would pull within four going to halftime, but the Tigers were able to keep their opponent at bay in the second half to eke out a 43-38 win.
The Tigers were led in scoring by George, who had 19 points on 9 of 20 shooting from the field. George also led the team in rebounds with 15, making for one of the team's two double doubles. The other was provided by Willis, who had 12 points on 4 of 11 shooting and 12 rebounds to match. Willis also led the team in steals with four. Sizemore, though not getting the team's improbable third double double, still led the team in assists with eight to go along with her eight points. Sizemore also had the lone block of the game for the Tigers.
Clatskanie (15-4) traveled to Aloha on Tuesday, Feb. 4 to take on Faith Bible Christian, but the results of the game were not available at the time of press. The girls return home Friday, Feb. 7 to take on Gaston at 6 p.m. inside the Clatskanie High School gym.
