Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Recently I interviewed Duncan Cruickshank of Skamokawa for our very first installment of Reader’s Fave! Reader’s Fave! is a short interview each week with someone in our community sharing their favorite book. Nothing difficult, just short and simple, and you get to share what you want to share. As 3rd graders would say, “Easy peasy!”
I asked Duncan, “What’s your favorite book?” He replied, “Catch-22.” He said he read Catch-22 when he was about 16 years old, growing up in Scotland. He remembered many passages from the book, including one where, as Duncan recalls, “There was a man wrapped in bandages who they just switched his feeding tube with his catheter bag when it filled up … “ He still remembers laughing out loud as he read the book. Duncan said, “I remember reading it on a public bus and laughing out loud. I seldom laugh out loud - and on a bus?!!”
If you haven’t read Catch-22 by Joseph Heller you might give it a read. It’s a fiction novel, written about ten years after WWII, with the story set in that particular war time. It’s mockery, cynicism, and goofiness all rolled into one great story. I’ll bet most of us are familiar with the phrase, “That’s a catch-22 situation” which came from this book.
Thank you Duncan for the first interview of Reader’s Fave!
