Naselle girls basketball win again

Naselle's girls basketball team has been playing well this season, winning eight of their first 12 games, including their most recent home contest against Columbia Adventist, whom they beat 60-44 on Jan. 13.

The Comets put together a solid all-around game against Columbia Adventist, going up 30-21 at halftime. Two of the offensive conductors for Naselle were Aubrey Katyryniuk and Brooke Davis. Katyryniuk created all sorts of problems for the opposition in the first half, scoring 15 points of her 25 points before the break.

Davis chipped in nine first-half points, and Haylee Rose was the third leading scorer in the half, scoring four points. The Comets would build on that first-half lead in the third quarter.

Backed by a raucous home crowd, the Comets surged in the third and extended the lead to 42-25 off the back of a 12-4 run. To Columbia Adventist's credit, they didn't give up, scoring five unanswered points in the final two minutes, the score standing 42-30 going into the fourth.

It wouldn't get much closer, though, and Naselle outscored Columbia Adventist 18-14 in the final period to lock up the 60-44 win. Though the Comets' depth was integral in holding the opposition to low-scoring totals, the second-half scoring was primarily handled by Davis and Katyryniuk. Davis poured in 11 points in the second half, including seven in the fourth. Katyryniuk put on a performance worthy of the captaincy, scoring seven in the fourth.

The win put Naselle at an overall record of 8-4 on the season and was their second consecutive win after losing to Toutle Lake 73-29 on Jan. 8. Despite the heavy defeat at the hands of Toutle Lake, Naselle rebounded with ferocity, inflicting a 52-17 blowout on league opponents Ocosta on Jan. 11.

The girls are off to a promising start to league play, going 4-1 through five games and taking the top spot in the Coastal 1B conference. The lone league loss came against Willapa Valley on Dec. 19. Naselle hasn't seen another league opponent pose a challenge since that defeat. Besides the win against Ocosta, the Comets also dispatched Lake Quinault 63-21 on Jan. 7.

Naselle will next take the court against conference opponent Mary M. Knight in a home game on Jan. 17. Mary M. Knight is currently ranked fourth of the seven teams in the Coastal 1B Conference with a 2-2 record in league play thus far.

The Comets hope to tack on another win on Friday and build on the mini two-game winning streak they have been working on.
