Thanks to a 20-point fourth quarter and a putback by freshman Will Van Voorst, the Clatskanie Tigers boys basketball team was able to win its second game of the season Monday, defeating Colton 49-48 on the road. "We played hard," said Coach Deshaun Combs. "(We) started off slow but we picked it up."
The Tigers were led by sophomore Gunner Engen, who had 17 points on 6 for 17 shooting from the field. Engen also had four rebounds and a steal for the Tigers. Junior Zack Mollenhour added 14 points, shooting 5 for 14 from the field to go along with his seven rebounds. Mollenhour led the team in both assists and steals with six each. Aside from putting in the last shot of the game, Van Voorst led the team in rebounds with 10. The freshman had seven points, shooting 2 for 9 from the field, but none were more important than his last one.
Aside from Mollenhour, sophomore Michael Simpson was the only Tiger contributing in all statistical categories Monday, scoring six points, pulling down eight rebounds, dishing three assists, managing a lone steal and putting up one block. Senior Brendan Shroll had two blocks on the night to lead the team.
"Gunner and Zack played really well for us," said Combs. "Michael Simpson played tough in the post. He was a beast on the boards. The two freshmen, Landyn Winton and Will Van Voorst, came in and gave great minutes. It was a tough win. (I'm) proud of our guys."
The Tigers (2-7) return home Friday, Jan. 3 to take on the Willamina Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. inside the Clatskanie High School gym. The results of the game will be included in next week's edition of the Wahkiakum County Eagle.
