Winning streak reaches three for Clatskanie girls

The Clatskanie girls basketball team was able to follow up a three-game losing skid with a three-game winning streak last week, beginning with Portland Adventist Academy.

Taking a 26-14 lead into halftime, the Tigers were able to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 19-5. The girls were led in scoring by sophomore Lacey Willis, who netted 20 points to go along with her team high 13 steals and five rebounds. Junior Joey Sizemore contributed 17 points of her own to finish with nine rebounds and a team high eight blocks and six assists. Sophomore Olivia George had the team’s only double double on the night, pulling down a team high 11 rebounds while scoring 10 points to go along with four steals and two assists.

Evening their season record at 3-3

The girls wouldn’t wait long to go above .500 entering the McKenzie Winter Classic tournament Friday, Dec. 20. Sizemore led the team in scoring with 15 points and assists with six in the 46-25 victory. George contributed 12 points in the victory, pulling down eight boards, three steals, and two assists. Willis led the team in rebounds with 12 and blocks with three. Sizemore and Willis had four steals apiece to lead the team in its tournament opener.

The girls’ win streak would reach three the following day in the tournament with another 46-25 victory; this one coming against Glendale’s Pirates. Sizemore led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points, rebounds with 12, and assists with four. Sizemore, along with junior Mya Jensen, led the team with five steals. George contributed 13 points, five rebounds, three steals, and a team high two blocks in the win. Willis added seven rebounds, five points, and three steals to round out the field.

“The girls have been making improvements in every game,” said coach Dawn Warren. “We need to continue to get better every game in order to be prepared for our upcoming league games. As a coaching staff, we are looking forward to continued growth and improvement this season.”

The Tigers (5-3) return to action Monday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Colton to take on the 3-3 Vikings.
