Naselle boys basketball lost its first game of the season against Willapa Valley, and it couldn't have been much closer, as the game was decided by a last-second shot with a final score of 60-58.
It was a home game for the Comets and ultimately came down to the very end. The Vikings hit a layup with seconds to go for the win, spoiling Naselle's 3-0 start to the season. Despite the loss, Naselle made a strong effort, with junior Leith Chadwick and senior captain Jacob Lindstrom each going for 18 points.
Lindstrom went on a tear in the second half, scoring 15 of his 18 after the break, helping Naselle battle back from a 33-27 first-half deficit. The Comets caught fire from deep in the third, knocking down four threes. Freshman Gus Burkhalter, senior captain Jack Strange, and junior Trajen Ford each hit a three in the period en route to a 22-point quarter for the squad. Strange also managed to get into double-digit scoring, finishing with 10 in the game.
The Comets entered the fourth up 49-48 but couldn't make the narrow lead last. Naselle was outscored in the final period 12-9, and Willapa Valley's Brody Aust came up with all of his six points in the quarter.
Luckily, the Comets got some of the frustration of the loss out of their system the following night with a 92-38 bashing of Clallam Bay on Dec. 21. Though it wasn't a conference matchup, getting back to winning ways was a good way to go into the holiday break.
As of now, Naselle sits fourth in the Coastal 1B League behind Lake Quinault (1-3), Willapa Valley (5-2), and Ocosta (4-3). The Comets will have some time before they play another conference game, as their next league opponent is Lake Quinault on Jan. 7.
