Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The Grays River Flood Control District met at the Grays River Fire Hall on November 13 for their monthly meeting. Commissioners Judy Johnson and Don Dyer were present. Commissioner Stephanie Sotka continues to be on medical leave.
The main topic of discussion was regarding the proposal presented at the October County Commissioners meeting to reenact the 2014 moratorium on intentional dike breaching. County Commissioners agreed to the proposal and have passed it on to Attorney Dan Bigelow for review. After his review is complete, a public hearing will be scheduled.
In the meantime, the Real Property Rights Advisory Board is drafting a petition. Leading that charge, Nick Nikkila stated, “The goal is to put forth a petition that provides the major pro and con arguments in a bias-free manner regarding the breaching of dikes. The purpose is to provide the Board of County Commissioners with a sense of the opinions of West Wahkiakum residents. This can assist them in their deliberations on the adoptions of a moratorium on dike breaching proposed by the Grays River Flood Control District.”
Other Districts in the county have expressed interest in the moratorium proposal.
The 2025 budget was presented for review and discussion. The budget has no changes from the prior year and was approved as presented. The tax levy will remain the same for the coming year.
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. Residents within the flood district are encouraged to attend.
