Veterans Breakfast at Rosburg Hall

As always, American Legion Post 0111 outdid themselves with a delicious Veterans breakfast on Saturday morning. Events like these allow for friends, family, and neighbors, that maybe haven't seen each other in a while, to connect over a good meal. It's one of the unique opportunities of living in our small community. Each year, I'm impressed how members of the Post set aside a date to honor and serve other veterans and the community. They not only cook the food, but they put a lot of time and effort into preparing for the day. The comradery among those in the kitchen is apparent, as most of them have been part of the Legion for many years. I am also impressed with all the students who volunteer. They are constantly asking everyone, with a smile, if they need anything else from the kitchen, and they clean up dishes and trash in record time.

The Rosburg Community Club ladies were in full fundraising mode selling red poppies and raffle tickets for several well put together gift baskets and other items. The drawing for the raffle will be held at the Senior Lunch Christmas potluck on December 18th . Thank you to all who put so much effort into a great morning.

Veterans Day assembly

The Naselle-Grays River Valley School did an outstanding job honoring local veterans in an all-school assembly on Nov. 7. There were special readings by students, including a poem titled "A Day of Love & Loss" by 7th grader Hannah Grace Hansen. There was also a reading of the first place essay in the VFW "Patriots Pen/Voice of Democracy" contest by Karsen Green and Emily Wirkkala.

Director of Music Karen Nelson directed the 8-12th grade band in the National Anthem and the Branches of Armed Services Medley. She also directed K-4 students in singing two music selections, Thank You, Soldiers and Oh, I Love America.

Principal Justin Laine honored each veteran in attendance by reading their service biographies. Many of the veterans were graduates of Naselle High School. 95-year-old Bob Ziesmer, the oldest military veteran in attendance, was honored with a standing ovation.

Thank you to faculty and teachers for putting on a great event to honor our local veterans.

Home Maintenance Tips

My husband is bit of a jack of all trades. Being in the HVAC trade for over thirty years, he is always preaching to people about the importance of preventative maintenance. Before the cold weather truly sets in, now is the best time to make sure your equipment is ready to go. Here are a few tips to consider. First, replace or clean the air filter(s) in your furnace, air handler, or mini-split system. Replacing a dirty filter helps air to flow more freely and minimizes damage to key components. Second, replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and in thermostat(s) or remote controls. There is nothing worse than waking up to the loud beeping from the low battery warning of a detector or not having heat because the batteries in the thermostat have died. That can sometimes lead to a costly service call for something simple. Also, for those with gas/propane appliances, it is important to have carbon monoxide detectors installed. Lastly, if you haven't had your equipment cleaned and serviced in a while, get on the schedule of a local company to have that done. I hope one of these tips will help your winter run a little more smoothly.
