Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The Wahkiakum County Photography Group celebrated its fourth anniversary with an inspiring exhibition at Cathlamet’s Rat Tap, thanks to the generosity of owner Stephanie Vossen, who donated the beautifully restored space for the event. This online community, launched on Facebook by local photographer Rene Westbrook, has grown to over 2,600 members, with people joining from Wahkiakum and beyond. Through the group, friends and family from across the world can glimpse the natural beauty and character of the area.
The exhibition featured stunning local images, from the Elochoman Marina to the Oregon Coast and every corner in between. On display were scenes of wildlife, rivers, ponds, coastlines, and even close-ups of everyday items, all capturing the charm and diversity of Wahkiakum County.
The event was also a chance to recognize Rene, whose vision has built a supportive community for photographers of all skill levels. Since moving to the county five years ago, she has become a true force in the local photography scene, mentoring and encouraging photographers to share their unique perspectives.
A special highlight for many attendees was meeting Donald Campbell, a group member whose wildlife photography has resonated deeply within the community. His raw, insightful images of the area’s animals reflect a patience and consistency that many admire.
Altogether, the Wahkiakum County Photography Group’s exhibition showcased not only the beauty of the region but also the passion of those who document it, reminding all who attended of the powerful connection between community and creativity.
