The Grays River Flood Control District held its monthly meeting on October 9, at the Grays River Fire Hall. Commissioners Judy Johnson and Don Dyer along with local residents and representatives from various organizations and agencies discussed a full agenda of new and old business.
Commissioner Stephanie Sotka will be on medical leave through at least the end of December. She hopes to return to her full duties in January.County Commissioner Gene Strong gave an update on the Grays River dredging grant that has been in process for several months. Unfortunately, the grant was not approve. However there are plans to reapply next year.
There was much discussion related to ongoing issues with dredging along the Columbia River and the subsequent impact of buildup in Grays Bay and Deep River. Commissioner Strong is continuing to work with state representatives and contacts at the Army Corps of Engineers. Commissioner Strong emphasized, “We’re not giving up on Deep River and Grays Bay.”
The Flood District Commissioners intend to present a proposal at the next County Commissioners meeting to reenact a 2014 moratorium on intentional dike breaching. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, November 13. Local residents within the flood district are encouraged to attend.
