Weed Board volunteers

To The Eagle

Did you know that Washington Sate was one of the first in the country to adopt weed laws to help farmers address Canada Thistle? While it’s true that Canadian Thistle is still present today, the Washington State Noxious Weed Board still considers it a class C noxious weed along with others for control. The state Noxious Weed Board performs the administrative work for the entire state while we locally attempt to carry out their mission “To serve as responsible stewards of Washington by aiding in the protection and preservation of the land, water and resources from the degrading impacts of noxious weeds.”

How can you help? By considering joining the Wahkiakum County Noxious Weed Board. We have five districts throughout the county, and we need weed board candidates in all five districts. These volunteer positions meet six times per year and direct the local noxious weed board policy under the umbrella of the State Noxious Weed Board. Candidates are nominated in an open meeting and appointed to the County Board of Commissioners. New terms would begin in January 2025. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining our board, reach out to me and I can guide you through the application process. My contact information is Andrew Lea, Noxious Weed Coordinator, (360) 795-3852 or leaa@co.wahkiakum.wa.us.

Weed Control Manager
