Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
At the Norse Hall 90th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 7, there were several decendents of the founders: Sandra Contreras, Susan Brown and Reid Kenner who are descendants of Kristian O. Wika, and Cameron Monte whose ancestor was Ole Torgert. It was wonderful to see the depth of some of the families that are still members of this historic institution right on Puget Island.
Board President Jan Silvestri gave a little history of the Helgeland Lodge 2-30 Norse Hall (Puget Island). Joanne Gray, Vice President of Sons of Norway District 2 which includes Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington offered a certificate of 90 years of dedication to the Sons of Norway. She also commented that it was one of the most cared-for halls of the four states in the District.
What a special treat to enjoy so much talent from our community! The Cathlamet Troubadours Ukelele group encouraged everyone to sing along to several tunes and invited all of us to come listen to them play every Wednesday night at Maria’s Place. The Robo-Rascals 4-H Robotics group gave a presentation on everything they have created and are working on to build a strong foundation for their futures. Dawn Rachele Holman serenaded the gathering with a beautiful acappella rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Gwen Gorley, Koby McDaniel, and Glenn Weist performed several numbers that got the crowd dancing in their seats.
After enjoying the beautiful 2nd floor hall, we all headed downstairs for split pea soup and bread. After the meal we were treated to a Norwegian delicacy Kransekake (cake) which is reserved for special occasions.
