Fred Stuart Ballif

Fred Stuart Ballif was born August 18, 1932, in Portland, Oregon, and was a graduate of Grant High School. Fred married Barbara Andrus in 1951, and they made their home in Portland, later moving to Beaverton. They had four children; Connie (Mitchell), Leonard, Rick, and Norma (Fletcher). They have 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Barbara predeceased Fred in 2022, after 70 years of marriage.

Fred began his working life in grocery and then sold advertising for years. Some of those years Barbara worked alongside him in sales. Later, they owned and operated two Muffin Break restaurants for 15 years, one at Clackamas Town Center and the other at 122nd and Division in Portland.

Both Barbara and Fred were known for their hospitality. Their Christian faith motivated a remarkable “open house” attitude resulting in many individuals coming to stay for extended periods in the house Barbara referred to as “the Lord’s house.” It was Barbara’s joy to open their home to many, either for a meal, a stay, or to lend an ear. Fred complimented this ministry with his gregarious, friendly manner. The kids knew they could bring a friend home with them, and many stayed for long periods.

From the time they received Christ, Fred and Barbara’s lives centered on ministry to people. Out of their love for the Lord, together they led youth groups and Bible Studies. Fred studied faithfully and enjoyed his years leading a men’s prayer breakfast. Over the years, he was active in church leadership and supported many mission projects.

Fred was known for his servant’s heart, a warm and congenial man. He was also known for his baritone singing voice. He sang solos in church and at weddings and funerals. During a difficult financial period for the family, he sang at funerals for extra income.

After Barbara’s death, Fred moved to Rosburg, Washington, to live beside his son and daughter-in-law. He loved his new neighborhood and God’s creation surrounding him.

He missed Barbara, the love of his life, greatly, often remarking on their 70 years of marriage. They truly had become one. Fred passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior July 3, 2024. We know he and Barbara are safe and well in the presence of their Lord Jesus.
