NICE START. After a rather damp and gloomy weekend, this Monday morning, which is Memorial Day, is letting us see a whole lot more sunshine and for that I am very thankful. I know there are a lot of ceremonies and things going on to commemorate this solemn occasion dedicated to all those that gave their lives while serving our country. May we never forget those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and may their families know that we will never forget them.
SPECIAL DAYS. Those celebrating birthdays on the last couple days of May and the beginning of yet another month, May 30 thru June 5 are: David Michaels, Benjamin McClain, Becca Keilwitz, Gary Emery, Stephanie Prestegard, Al Bergseng, Amy Knowles, Rena Cramer Morris, Sharon Hart, Tylor Nortrup, Barb Bain, Brian Swanson, Gale Luthi, Tracy Cleveland, Annika Vik, Jill Havens, Robyn Longtain, Terry Vik, Derrick Bardsley, Marti Florek, Chloe Cothren, Mike Wegdahl, LeRoy Beard, Tori Wegdahl, Mackenzie Stevens, Tim Rushing, Brooklyn Blain, Shannon Cochran, Scott Ahrndt, Brian Good and 67'er Mike Hicks. Eva Snow and Scott Kennedy are celebrating their anniversary this week. Enjoy your special days everybody!
DONATE DON'T DUMP. If you have good used items that are to good to throw away, you can donate them to the Puget Island Fire Hall, which will be taking in usable items for the next two Wednesdays, June 5 and June 12 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you are unable to bring them, it's possible you can arrange for things to be picked up but you must call either Sherrill at 360-951-3985 or Liz at 360-200-2247 and they may be able to help you out. You could also contact the fair manager, Patty Dursteler and see if they will take more things at the fairgrounds as they have monthly Flea Market sales. Call 360-795-3480. If you have a lot of clothing, there is Clothing Bank just off of SR 4 past the grocery and Napa stores, on Fern Hill road. The small building at the first left, located behind the church.
CAR SHOW THIS SATURDAY. Don't forget that this Saturday, June 1, is the Cruizin' to the Fair car show down here at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds, so we hope you'll come and check it out. We'll also pray for some nice weather as these kinds of events are much more fun for everybody when the weather is decent. Fingers crossed! The forecast shows sun and clouds, so that would be great!) There will also be the a sale going on in the T-building, so you could pick up some real bargains while you're down here. Seeing all those awesome, classic cars is terrific and it costs nothing for onlookers to get in. They hope you will come on down and enjoy the car show, buy a T-shirt, enjoy some food, WLC Bingo and bargains all right here in Skamokawa. If you need more info, contact Diane at 360-465-2825 or Patty at 360-795-3480.
67'ers WILL GATHER. Also on that day, if you graduated from WA-KI-HI, Class of 1967, remember that our classmate, Sharon (Stout) will be visiting that day from Indiana, so don't forget that you said you were attending the no host lunch at noon.
THREE THINGS. On Wednesdays, the Cathlamet Senior Friendship group meets up at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on SR 409 from noon to 3 over on Puget Island. They have various activities and separate groups with specialized interests. They also have lunch together and you can just gab if you want. Nancy Nelson started this group and she hopes that if you're looking to meet some folks and do something besides just sit home alone, that you'll come by and visit with other Seniors.
On Thursdays, we have the Community Breakfast down here on Thursdays from 10 AM to Noon at the Skamokawa Grange Hall and you're all invited to come and visit with your "crew" or show up and meet some new folks that have moved to the area. It's always fun to meet up in a casual setting, enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat as well. This is a free event but donations are sincerely appreciated so that this event can continue on thanks to some great folks.
Also, the Street Market in Cathlamet down by the Elochoman Slough Marina has begun and will be taking place every Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is a great place to shop and check out what craftsman and artisans have to offer. When the time is right, there will likely be those with produce to sell as well. Want to be a vendor, and need info? Call: 360-849-9411.
JUNE 8 IS BUSY. As always, the second Saturday of the month is the time for the monthly Flea Market down here at the fairgrounds from 9 to 3 . This is also the time the Sons of Norway put on their monthly Bingo games over at the Norse Hall on Puget Island.Doors open at 5:30 and games beginning at 6, so head that way and play.
PIGYS. I feel like a broken record but many folks are still asking about the big sale going on over on Puget Island, so here goes: There is a yearly sale that happens over there in June. PIGYS stands for Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale. This year it is a weekend early, so it will be held on June 21, 22 and 23. The folks on the Island sign up (for a fee) and get on a map, and then folks who come over to the Island will be handed a map and these places will be designated on it, so you can work around the Island and pick up those great bargains. It's a lot of fun for those who love to shop with a lot of different sales in a relatively small area. Don't forget to stop by the Norse Hall (444 SR 409) on Friday and Saturday (June 21 and 22) and pick up one of their pulled pork sandwiches from 11 to 2, and help support the Sons of Norway Lodge. This is a great place to stop and rest a minute, fill up on some food and have a beverage between all that looking and shopping!
ADULT PICKLEBALL. I've been asked to remind folks over 18, if they'd like to play Pickleball, there is a group in the area, so call Floyd at: 702-373-8255 if you're interested in learning how to play and join the current group, it's fun!
57'ers MET. Recently, Jean Horman, Gene and Karen Healy, Frank and Carolyn Pedersen, Billie Jo Cothren and Gordie met up at the Duck Inn. Having lunch with fellow 57'ers is always nice, especially when classmates are dwindling or live very far away, so it can be a pretty small group. I got to tag along as one of those 57'ers is my brother Frank, another one is my cousin Gene and the other was a former neighbor growing up on Puget Island. I've known Jean forever and we had a good gab.
NEED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT? If you happen to find yourself in need of some medical equipment, like a cane, walker, crutches or a bath bench lifts, etc. and you just can't afford to buy any, then you're in luck. The Wahkiakum Lions Club has a great array of things that one can borrow for when you may need something to help you get around. This great club has a "Medical Equipment Loan Closet" and while they may not have everything you need, it certainly wouldn't hurt to give them a call and see if they can't help you with something they happen to have on hand. You can call Carol for help at: 360-795-3337.
WHS GRADUATION 2024. In case you weren't aware, the upcoming graduating class of 2024 will be saying goodbye to ole WA-KI-HI on June 7 and heading out on their own. It's hard to believe the school year is over already and for these young folks, the next chapter of their lives is just beginning. Congratulations!
ON LINE AUCTION. Speaking of these graduates, they will also be benefitting from the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars program which holds an online auction to help raise money for scholarships for WA-KI-HI graduates. The online auction is currently happening so check it all out at: https://www.32auctions.com/Mules2024. The deadline for bids is June 9 at 6 PM. Many thanks to the WDS group for continuing to do this for our kids and a huge thanks to those that donate items and bid.

WARNING! If you're one of those folks who only get paid once a month, well, you only have seven more paydays before Christmas. Yikes! This also means just thirty more Fridays prior to Christmas. Now, this news isn't meant to freak you out, but it does give you an excuse to shop at places like the street market, or the local shops around town now, so you won't be overwhelmed in December. It's also a heads up to those husbands who just might drag their heels a bit. Shop now!
WANT MORE NEWS? If you're one of those folks wanting to hear more, or different news articles, please contact the Eagle office and volunteer to write something that you feel others would enjoy. You can attend various meetings around our area. Give it a whirl! If you want more of something, sometimes it's you that needs to help supply it. It can be a fun new experience. What's that ole saying? "You're either part of the solution or you're part of the problem."
