Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
NICE OUT. Well, we were wanting some nice weather and we finally got it, so I hope you're enjoying it. I have to say that I was a bit overwhelmed by the beginning of this dry spell when we went from 36 degrees in the morning to 91 by late afternoon last Friday, that was unexpected and way too hot for me! It looks like temps are much more to my liking this week as there will be some clouds and sunshine but it will be dry and in the upper sixties, much better for yardwork and outdoor chores I think.
LIGHTS. Did you get to see the Northern Lights this past weekend? I know there were some fantastic pictures from folks around our local area who stayed up late enough to get some Friday night, so kudos to those folks as they were certainly a sight to see beings it's such a rare thing for us in our area! I was able to see them but from my house, it was tougher to see them. But about 1 AM, they covered more area and I was able to see them at least. They started out dark pink for me and turned into more greenish ones as they got higher and more northern, really awesome. However, folks on Puget Island really got the best view. Mother Nature showing off the splendor of the skies in many brilliant colors! Hope you got to see them too!

ACCEPTING DONATIONS. The Puget Island Fire Auxiliary are taking things on several days in the upcoming two months in order to raise money for their good works that they do throughout the year, during the annual PIGYS sale in June. In case you missed the other notices, PIGYS stands for "Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale" which takes place June 21-23. Folks sign up, get on a map, and then people come from all over to hunt for treasures. It's a great time to get rid of your extra stuff! So, if you don't want to have a sale yourself, then bring your things to the fire hall on Puget Island at 475 SR 409 on these Wednesdays: May 22 and 29 or June 5 and 12 between 3-8 pm and they'll take them off your hands. However, they do not accept large furniture items and ask that all items are decent, clean and are gently used. For more information, please contact either Sherrill at 360-951-3985 or Liz at 360-200-2247....Please help those that help us!
SONS OF NORWAY. Speaking of the PIGYS sale, I just want to remind folks that the members of the SON lodge will be serving up their famous pulled pork sandwiches at the Norse Hall, 444 SR 409 during the first two days of PIGYS, so you can enjoy those tasty sandwiches while you take a break from shopping, from 11 AM to 2 PM on June 21 and 22.
FROZEN BERRY SALE. Every year the Wahkiakum Lions Club sells berries in a 15 pound case which includes six, forty ounce pouches in each case. There are also some that come in twenty-four ounce sizes with twelve units per case in an eighteen pound case. You have a month to order these berries but the earlier you do this, the better off you'll be. They can be picked up on June 22 at 10 AM in one of three locations: Wahkiakum High School parking lot, or the Skamokawa Grange parking lot or the Rosburg Store parking lot. There are various berries and prices and order forms have all of that info on them, but they range from fifty-seven dollars to sixty dollars a case. Payment is due in advance. Berries available are strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and a 3-berry medley. For more information and/or make an order if you haven't found an order form, call: 360-355-0871.
PLANT SALE. If you missed the annual plant sale up at Erickson Park on the 14th, you still have one more chance to pick some up, as the Master Gardeners will be back up at the city garden in Erickson Park on Tuesday, May 21 from 10 to 1 pm. Not only can they sell you some great plants but they can give you all the garden tips you may need to make sure you have just what you need to make your garden grow and be successful with just the right soils and fertilizers and just the right amount of water and light and the best area to plant them in.
COMMUNITY BREAKFAST. Another reminder of the free Community Breakfast held at the Skamokawa Grange Hall every Thursday from 10 to Noon, donations are gladly accepted. This week, they will also have free passes to go and see a circus in Longview at the end of the month, so that would be great for the kids to see! The hall, also has a "pantry" where there are food items that are available to those that may need to add to their kitchen food supplies.
SENIOR GROUP MEETS. Don't forget that many seniors are now meeting on Wednesdays over at the big white church on SR 409 on Puget Island, so if you're looking for some "senior company", they meet up from noon to 3. There are many activities and some have split off to meet up on other days to just do "their thing" so stop on by and see what's happening!
CONGRATS M'LADY! Well, we must close this column by saying a very hearty "Congratulations" to Jan Silvestri on being named the Womans Club, 'Citizen of the Year" as she certainly deserves it! If you missed last week's Eagle, you might want to go and buy a copy that would still be available at the Eagle office, as she has had quite the life and has certainly been the "spark" in all the things she has taken on in her life. Anyway, way to go Jan, you deserved this great recognition!
THE END. I'm pretty sure most of us thought that there would never be a day when we wouldn't be seeing "DeBriae Logging" trucks and equipment going up and down our local roadways, but as we read last week, we were wrong, Jerry DeBriae has finally called it quits and is retiring. While he's still got some things to manage and take care of in the area, his heavy load is much lighter now and so we want to send our "Happy Retirement" wishes to him, along with a big "Thank-You" for all the things he did for our community.
DON'T FORGET. The Wahkiakum 4-H Great White Tail Race is happening this Saturday around the refuge area, and the deadline for submitting things for the upcoming online auction for the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars is May 21, and the pre-register time for the Cruizin to the Fair car show is May 24, so time is zipping by. All the info about these things was in my column last week so please refer to that column for the all the contact numbers.
IT'S ARMED FORCES DAY THIS SATURDAY, MAY 18. We salute all six branches, which includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corp, Space Force and Coast Guard. May you know that we value your service and pray for your safety always.
