An evening of history returns to Little Island Creamery when author and film maker Ron Craig presents “The Story of York.” York was William Clark’s slave on the Lewis and Clark expedition which is such an important part of Wahkiakum County History. York participated in the entire exploration and made significant contributions to its success.
York was the first African American to cross the continent and see the Pacific Ocean. Ron Craig, Astoria resident, has a 16-year history with York, beginning with a 1999 documentary, “Who Was York? A New Look at the Lewis and Clark Expedition.”
Craig attended the 2001 White House ceremony in which York received the honorary rank of sergeant. A special Oregon Public Broadcasting, the production of “Searching for York” will be shown at the presentation.
