Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
This year’s annual Wahkiakum Community Garden plant sale will include a wide variety of vegetable plant starts, as well as many ornamental plants, thanks in part to the work of Wahkiakum High School students with guidance from CTE teacher Kyle Hurley and WSU Master Gardener and WHS volunteer Tony Aegerter. Students are growing tomatoes and peppers, including more than 120 tomato plants across 9 varieties for the upcoming Community Garden plant sale. The Community Garden plant sale is May 14th and 21st, 10 am to 1 pm at Erickson Park, on Columbia Street in Cathlamet.
“This is a great partnership with the school this year,” said Shari Parker, WSU Extension office coordinator. “They’re helping bring more plants to the sale, while learning about horticulture. It’s a win-win!” WSU Master Gardeners and Community Garden volunteers are also raising a wide variety of plant starts for the plant sale, including other vegetables like beans and lettuces, as well as ornamental annuals and perennials. Master Gardeners will be at the sale to help with gardening questions.
All proceeds from the plant sale benefit the Wahkiakum Community Garden. The Wahkiakum Community Garden brings together volunteer gardeners to raise produce for local food banks and provides plots for gardeners to grow their own fresh fruits and vegetables each year.
