Stephens is teacher of the month

KUKN clearly knows their ABCs.

The radio station named J.A. Wendt kindergarten teacher Karrin Stephens Teacher of the Month after receiving a nomination for the educator from a senior at Wahkiakum High School.

Senior Avrey Wiltse-Hiatt volunteers in Stephens' classroom every Friday morning. She plans to get a degree in education and one day, have a kindergarten classroom of her own.

Wiltse-Hiatt's nomination reads, "Mrs. Stephens is an extraordinary teacher. She inspires her students and fellow teachers to be curious learners. I've witnessed her ability to take a struggling student and give them hope."

"[Avrey has] really connected with Karrin's teaching style and genuine love for her students," Principal Nikki Reese wrote.

"I refer to kindergarten as Karrin's playground," Reese added. "She's just meant to teach our youngest students. She's completely comfortable in organized chaos and loves to be silly with the children. Her knowledge of teaching foundational math and reading skills allow her to meet the various needs of her little learners.

"She develops great relationships with parents and her students absolutely love her. We are lucky to have her as part of our school family at J.A. Wendt Elementary School/John C. Thomas Middle School."
