Mule football home opener Friday

Wahkiakum High School football hosts Rainier this Friday in their home opener, starting at 7 p.m.

The Mules got a soft start this last weekend with a three team jamboree in Toutle Lake, which included the home Duck team, and Fort Vancouver.

Two of the three teams completed 10 plays before switching out, giving each team and their coaches an opportunity to see what was working and what wasn't.

"It is a good time to go one hundred percent against other schools and see how you stack up," Coach Ryan Lorenzo said. "It showed us some stuff we needed to work on."

Lorenzo praised the offensive and defensive lines, adding that a couple young guys on the team stood out to the coaching staff.

"Zakk Carlson had some really nice throws from the quarterback spot," Lorenzo said. "He also had a big interception on defense. Donovan Watson was spectacular on the offensive and defensive line."

"Defense was rallying to the ball," he added. "Lots of tackles of three, four, or five black jerseys on the ball carry. It was really fun to see."

Lorenzo said there was a lot more to work to do to be ready for Friday, but the Mules will take it one day at a time.
