Wahkiakum High School senior Landon Nielsen is headed to the State 2B Track and Field Meet which takes place in Yakima this year on May 25, 26, and 27.

Nielsen competed in three events on Friday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis at the 2B District 4 Track Meet. Nielsen did not qualify for state in the 400 meters, after finishing with a time of 57.68 and an eighth place. He will, however, compete in the shot put after a 40-7 throw earned him a sixth place finish, and in the high jump after clearing 5-6 for fourth place.

The Naselle Comets head to the State 1B Track and Field Meet this week, which will be held in Yakima simultaneously with the 2B meet. The Comets are sending 12 athletes who qualified for state in several events at the 1B District 1/2/3/4 Championship in Tacoma.

Comet boys qualified in the following events:

400 meters - 1. Derek Suomela 52.42; 800 meters - 4. Suomela 2:11.9; 4x100 relay - 8. Arvid Ross, Jason Gardner, Jacob Pakenen, Elmer Toftemark 49.95; Shot put - 8. Tyler Kirkman 37-9.5; Discus - 1. Kirkman 121-9, 3. Toftemark - 116-10, 4. Brayden Colombo 116-9; High jump - 3. Suomela 5-6; Pole vault - 2. Pakenen 11, 8. Gardener 8; Long jump - 2. Suomela 18-6.5, 3. Pakenen 18-5.75; Triple jump - 8. Andy Rosas 35-7.

Comet girls qualified in the following events:

4x200 meter relay - 6. Bella Colombo, Bella Dunagan, Mylee Dunagan, Desirae Gifford 1:57.97; Javelin - 4. Colombo 105-5; High jump - 2. M. Dunagan 4-8, 3. B. Dunagan 4-6; Pole vault - 2. B. Colombo 8-9, 4. B. Dunagan 7; Long jump - 4. M. Dunagan 14-9; Triple jump - 2. M. Dunagan 31-5.5.
