As April quickly approaches, the volunteers for Wahkiakum Autism Awareness are excited to announce a joint fundraiser with the WHS Varsity Baseball Team. Scheduled for Saturday, April 15 starting at 4 p.m., volunteers will host a bake sale to raise funds for a Sensory Room at J.A. Wendt Elementary during the home game against
Rainier.
The baseball team will wear the locally designed Autism Mule Puzzle patch on their warm up shirts to help raise awareness and show their support. These special patches, as well as stickers and pins will also be available for purchase, with all proceeds donated to the Wahkiakum School District for use to create a Sensory Room for children on the Autism spectrum and with special needs. These stickers, patches and pins are
currently available at Cathlamet Pharmacy and Cathlamet Market.
April is the official month for Autism Awareness so this is a great opportunity for students, parents, teachers and the community to come together and raise funds for a great cause. We’ve already had one parent step forward, as local teacher and official baseball team mom Nicole Wilson, has graciously offered to donate all concession sales for the day.
According to the National Autism Resources website, “Sensory rooms can promote self-organization, be a calming area, provide leisure, help with sensory integration, or act as skill training centers. Furthermore, a well designed room can serve people of all ages, multiple disabilities, as well as facilitators, teachers, parents, caregivers, and therapists.”
