Hook the Hawg fishing derby starts today

Hook the Hawg is back! The derby was a huge success in March, giving out $3,140 in prize money and bringing lots of people to the community for a bit of fishing. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and Wahkiakum County Port 1 are hoping for a repeat.

The event takes place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Elochoman Slough Marina.

To participate, register online at wwww.wahkiakum.us/hawg2. Adult tickets are $25 and youth tickets for 17 and under are $10.

Prizes will be awarded for adult and youth competition.

The Chamber will have a booth open each morning from 7-10 a.m. to answer questions and weigh-in will be from 2-5 p.m. for fish caught each day. All salmon must be gilled and gutted.

On Thursday and Friday there will be a cash prize for the largest fish, $100 for adults, $80 for youth. On Saturday, the remaining money in the pot will be divvied up amongst the top three winners in both categories and presented at an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m. One must be present to win.

For more information, call the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce at 360-795-9996.

“With the success of Hook the Hawg during springer season, there are definitely going to be people visiting the area for the derby,” Port 1 Manager Todd Souvenir said. “The marina is definitely full. It should be a fun event.”
