Mules, Comets head to state track meet

May 20: Wahkiakum at the 2B District Championship at W.F West in Chehalis

Local track and field athletes will compete in the state Class 1B and 2B track and field meets this weekend at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

For the Wahkiakum Mules, Reigha Niemeyer and Wayne Harrison will compete.

For the Naselle Comets, Derek Suomela, Josh Chadwick, Jayden Ding, Riley Thorsen, Brandon Kincaid, Tyler Kirkman, Malcolm Schell, Brayden Colombo, Trenton Stephens, Jacob Pakenen, Echo Cenci and Mylee Dunagan qualified for the state meet.

Class 2B

Boys’ teams: Mules finished in 17th place out of 21 teams with 11.5 points. Results: Javelin — 5. Wayne Harrison 162-5 PR. 6. Landon Nielsen 150-3 PR. High jump—6. (tie) 6. Nielsen 5-8.

Girls’ teams: Mules tied for 18th place out of 20 teams with 9 points. Results: Javelin 2. Reigha Niemeyer 107-8.

The top five finishers in boys competition qualify for the state track and field meet, while the top seven girls continue. Harrison and Niemeyer are headed to Cheney this weekend, May 26-28, to compete in the javelin event in the WIAA 2B state Championships at Eastern Washington University. Niemeyer will throw at 12:30 on Friday and Harrison at 3 p.m on Saturday, according to Coach Rob Garrett.

Class 1B

May 19: Naselle at the 1B District Championships at Franklin Pierce in Tacoma

Boys’ teams: Naselle finished in second place out of 19 teams with 106 points. Naselle girls 15 points, 12th out of 19. Individual results:

Girls’ teams: Naselle finished in 12th place out of 19 teams with 15 points. Individual results:

100m — 6. Echo Cenci 13.42. High jump — 4. Mylee Dunagan 4-6. Pole vault — 3. Cenci 7-6.

The WIAA 1B State Championships are held in Cheney May 26-28, at EWU. The top eight finishers in boys competition and the top six finishers in girls competition qualify for the state tournament.
