Comet teams playing in state softball, baseball tournaments

Both the Naselle Comet baseball and softball teams will play in the state Class 1B tournaments this Friday and Saturday.

The ladies are headed to the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima. They open Friday, 12 noon, against DeSales of Walla Walla.

The winner of that game advances to the semifinals at 4 p.m. that day against the winner of the Darrington-Liberty Christian matchup. The losers of the two games meet at 4 p.m. The winner of that game continues action on Saturday, 12 noon with a chance to reach the 3 p.m. game to determine third and fourth places.

Semifinal winners play for first and second places at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Comet gents defeated Almira-Coulee-Hartline 15-10 last Saturday to qualify for the eight-team state playoffs.

The Comets piled on 17 hits to score their runs. Jacob Lindstrom and Clay Bergeson both had three hits; Joe Strange, Kolten Lindstrom, Jarod Laney and Craig Ritz each had two. On the mound were Strange, K. Lindstrom and Dean Helvey, who finished the game by striking out seven batters in 3.2 innings.

Earlier Saturday, the Comets blanked Wilbur-Creston 13-0 as Kolten Lindstrom threw a no hitter, striking out eight batters in the five inning game.

The Comets, who finished second in state last year, head to Ridgefield for their state competition, taking on Crosspoint of Bellingham at 4 p.m.
