To The Eagle:
A writer in last week’s paper suggested that the reason many good people don't want to run for office has something to do with religion being used as a cudgel (stick).
The real reason many good people don't run for office is that the two parties have at the ready, a professional smear machine designed to destroy anyone that dares to challenge the political establishment.
I think good people should run for office and point out to the voters that when the smears start, and they will, the words of Jesus Christ apply, “Let him amongst you without sin cast the first stone.”
If I were certain that I would get every vote of those that have sinned I would run for president and win by a landslide.
We all sin. If we are a believer we can repent and ask God to forgive us, if we are not a believer then society should forgive anyone if they undue any harm they have caused to others, so you see there is hope for us all.
The second point made in that writer’s letter is that the Constitution keeps religion out, out of what, I am not sure, but the Constitution of the United States guarantees the free exercise of religion and in no way keeps religion out of anything that doesn't negatively impact the rights of others.
I do not, and I am sure many do not, object to abortion only on religious grounds but on the fact that killing another human being is a disgusting solution to a very preventable problem. Here are a few alternatives if you don't want a child: Abstain, use birth control, get a vasectomy, have your tubes tied and if all else fails there is always adoption.
The only exceptions being rape or the mother’s life. I know some don't agree with me on this subject but I really don't care. I have my opinion and you have yours. God Bless America.
