The following is a summary of the 2020 census of Wahkiakum County, completed by the United Census Bureau.
The total population on April 1, 2020 was 4,422 compared to 3,978 a decade earlier, an increase of 444 people.
Females make up 50.1 percent of the population. While 33 percent of the population is 65 and older, 17.1 percent of the population is under the age of 18, and 3.5 percent are under the age of 5.
According to race, 91.2 percent of Wahkiakum County is white, 0.7 percent is black or African American alone, 1.7 percent is American Indian or Alaska Native alone, 1.8 percent is Asian alone, and 0.2 percent is Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander alone.
Four point five percent of the population is two or more races, and 5.7 percent is Hispanic or Latino, while 86.5 percent is white alone, and not Hispanic or Latino.
They counted 522 veterans, or people who had served active duty in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or for the Merchant Marines in World War II.
They also found that 4.7 percent of the population was not born a U.S. citizen.
They counted 2,180 housing units in 2019. Housing units were described as houses, apartments, mobile homes, a group of rooms, or a single room that is occupied as separate housing quarters. Almost 87 percent of those homes are occupied by their owners. The median value of those homes between 2015 and 2019 was $218,800 and median gross rent in the county was $760.
There were 1,897 households, which is described as people living in a housing unit. Between 2015-2019, the average number of persons living in a household was 2.22.
The percentage of those people who were living in the same house the year before was 92.4 percent.
In 5.2 percent of the homes, a language other than English was spoken.
Computers are found in 89.8 percent of those homes and 81 percent of the households have a broadband internet subscription, according to the census.
While 92.1 percent of the total population are high school graduates, 19.4 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Census takers found that 16.9 percent have a disability and are under the age of 65 and that 8.3 percent of the population under the age of 65 does not have health insurance.
Thirty-nine percent of the population, 16 and over, is employed and 34.7 of females are employed. These numbers include anyone that works on the family farm or family business, for instance, without pay.
The mean travel time for employees was 37.2 minutes.
The median household income is $53,227, while the per capita income in the last 12 months was $31,110.
Almost 11 percent of Wahkiakum’s population is considered to be living in poverty.
