Special meeting set for Nov. 3
Submitted by Superintendent Lisa Nelson
The Naselle-Grays River Valley School District Board of Directors held its monthly meeting on October 19.
In personnel matters, the board acknowledged the resignation of Haleigh See, middle school girls’ basketball coach and approved the hire of Haleigh See as assistant girls’ basketball coach. Cody Olsen was hired as assistant boys’ basketball coach. Marie Green and Robert Dalton were hired as middle school girls’ basketball coaches. In final personnel matters, Victoria Nanney was hired as the Youth Camp school secretary.
Tyson Vogeler (Grays River) was interviewed by the board to fill the vacant board member position. After a roll call vote of 4-0 in favor of his candidacy, Superintendent Nelson swore him in.
In other matters of business, two policies were reviewed for consideration: Accommodating students with seizures and Personnel Leaves. Those policies will be up for possible adoption at the November board meeting.
The first two hours of the meeting were spent listening to concerns from numerous parents and students over the Department of Health’s requirement placed on the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (WIAA’s) procedures requiring covid-19 testing for unvaccinated athletes during the winter sports season. The rule behind this is that basketball is an indoor, aerosol, high contact sport. Nine attendees made presentations, and a number of other parents expressed their concerns about testing and indicated they would either seek schooling elsewhere or not have their children participate in the sport.
A follow up board meeting is being scheduled for November 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. to continue dialogue around testing requirements.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be Nov. 16, 6:30 p.m., in the Commons.
