Gary Michael Backman, Sr., 70, of Puget Island, died July 2, 2021 in Longview.
He was born to George and Geneva (McCoy) Backman on October 21, 1950 in Longview and lived his entire life in Wahkiakum County, graduating from Wahkiakum High School in 1968.
He married Martha Clark on December 12, 1970. Martha died July 10. He commercial fished in Alaska and on the Columbia River for over 50 years. Gary worked as a logger for several years and later for Stanley Sanitation, and on the Stanley Farm for many years. He loved farming and worked on his parents’ dairy farm, and later he and Martha ran their own beef farm. He was known for his work ethic, being a hard worker and going the extra mile at whatever job he held. Gary worked at the Wahkiakum School District for the last 26 years and was a beloved staff member there. He attended the Assembly of God Church and was the van driver for many years.
He is survived by his son Gary Michael Backman Jr (Carrie), his daughter Cheryl Backman (Jason Montgomery), a brother, Robert Backman (Signe), a sister-in-law, Roberta Backman and extended family. Gary was preceded in death by a son, James Backman and a brother, Richard Backman. Gary was proud of his community and will be honored at a Celebration of Life service at JA Wendt Elementary School on Thursday August 12 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery and a luncheon at Norse Hall on Puget Island.
