Sheriff's Report, January 21, 2021

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

January 11 — 8:39 a.m. A Cathlamet resident said that she had been informed that someone had her social security number, an old address, and license and was trying to get a Target credit card in her name. She had contacted the bank and wanted to file a police report. 12:55 p.m. A caller reported a suspicious vehicle with two occupants parked on a Grays River road. 1:50 p.m. A caller witnessed a man on East Birnie Slough shoot a goose from a black lifted truck before jumping out of the vehicle and climbing a fence to retrieve the goose. There were three men in the vehicle. State patrol was notified. A deputy was unable to locate the subjects. 7:29 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an Elochoman Valley resident who had fallen. 8:55 p.m. A caller reported a rock about the size of a volleyball on SR 4 in the Nassa Point area. 10:14 p.m. A burglar alarm was activated at a Rosedale business. 10:28 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance and the Grays River Fire Department aided a Grays River resident who had cut her head in a fall.

January 12 — 3:53 a.m. A flood warning was issued for the Grays River and its tributaries. At 5:41 a.m. a caller said there was water over the Hull Creek Road; State patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation were notified. 5:47 a.m. A caller said there was water over SR 4 just west of Skamokawa. 5:53 a.m. The west end of Loop Road was closed because of high water. 5:59 a.m. The east end of Covered Bridge Road was closed. At 6:53 a.m., Eden Valley Road was closed near the two mile marker. 6:54 a.m. One lane of Deep River Road was closed after trees came down. 10:45 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident complaining of chest pain. 12:34 p.m. Barr Road and Altoona/Pillar Rock Road were closed because of high water. 12:44 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual in Cathlamet who was detoxing from alcohol. 2:19 p.m. A caller said that a restraining order had been violated. The person was harassing him to drop the order and had threatened him. The caller said the person had a revolver. 2:22 p.m. A caller reported that he had lost a wallet. 3:48 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver in a vehicle with Texas plates heading west on SR 4 near County Line Park. 5:26 p.m. Deputies, state patrol, and the Grays River Fire Department responded when two vehicles got stuck in flood water on SR 4 in the Rosburg area. A tow truck was called. 6:33 p.m. A caller reported that there was water over SR 4 in the Grays River area. The Grays River Fire Department checked and found signs had been posted. 11:08 p.m. A tree had fallen on Ingalls Road. The county road department was notified. 11:10 p.m. A caller reported that there was a power outage west of KM. Addresses in Rosburg and Deep River also reported outages. The PUD responded but was unable to get to the source of the outage or to the substation because of high water. They were unable to restore power and said they would reassess the situation in the morning. 11:24 p.m. A caller reported that a tree had fallen and was blocking Elochoman Valley Road. The county road department responded. A second caller said it looked like the phone line was down as well. 11:54 p.m. A caller reported that a tree was down on SR 4 near Bunker Hill, blocking the westbound lane. An agency in Cowlitz County was notified.

January 13 — 12:16 a.m. A caller reported that there was water over the roadway on Middle Valley Road and Ingalls Road. 12:17 a.m. A caller reported a low hanging tree on SR 4 in the Grays River area. 12:48 a.m. A caller accidentally dialed 911. 1:05 a.m. A fire alarm was activated at a Cathlamet business. The Cathlamet Fire Department responded. The alarm company canceled the call. 1:34 a.m. West Valley Road was closed. 1:45 a.m. A caller said he had gotten a flat tire and would be back in the morning to pick up his truck which he had left in the parking lot at Nassa Point. 3:52 a.m. A caller reported that three trees were down, blocking both lanes of Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. 3:20 p.m. The county road department said that both lanes of Deep River Road were open. 4:10 a.m. A caller reported that a tree was down and in the eastbound lane of SR 4 near County Line Park. 5:35 a.m. A caller reported a power outage at an Elochoman Valley home. The PUD was notified. 7:48 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported that a transformer had sparked. The PUD was notified. 8:15 a.m. A caller reported a lost canoe. 9:20 a.m. A person stopped by the sheriff’s department to report that two pigs were running down an Elochoman Valley road. Dispatch attempted to contact potential owners, but had no success. 10:07 a.m. A caller reported that someone was shooting a rifle on private property in Deep River. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was notified. 2:15 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver on a Puget Island road that stopped after reaching a Cathlamet business. A deputy responded but was unable to locate the vehicle. 2:32 p.m. A caller said he was attacked by four St. Bernards on Risk Road while riding his bicycle. One dog bit him and latched on to the bicycle by the seat post. The caller said he was not injured and his property was not damaged. He was concerned it might happen to someone else. A deputy said he would follow up with the owners. 2:40 p.m. A deputy was advised that a customer at the marina was paying his bill and leaving after being uncooperative earlier that day. 4:11 p.m. Portions of Loop Road and Barr Road were reopened. 6:32 p.m. Pacific County received two phone calls about a truck in the water on SR 4 in the Rosburg area. Deputies, state patrol, the Grays River Fire Department and the Grays River ambulance responded. The vehicle was towed out of the water. There were no injuries reported. 9:44 p.m. A caller reported hearing loud noises on SR 4 in the Deep River area. She thought it sounded like gunshots, but another family member said it sounded like metal on metal, possibly a car accident. State patrol responded but were unable to find anything. 10:20 p.m. An alarm was activated at two Rosedale businesses. A responsible party was notified and he canceled the alarm.

January 14 — 8:10 a.m. A burglar alarm was activated at a home east of Cathlamet. The homeowner was contacted and he said everything was fine. 8:23 a.m. The county road crew reported a disabled vehicle that appeared to have been abandoned on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. It was blocking a lane of traffic. 7:27 p.m. A caller reported that someone had struck his truck while it was parked at the refuge. 8:27 p.m. An individual at a Puget Island address was taken into custody, and a search was conducted. 9:12 p.m. A caller reported that there was a deceased dog in the middle of East Birnie Slough Road.

January 15 — 10:01 a.m. A caller reported a capsized sailboat near Whites Island. It appeared to have been in the water for a long time. The US Coast Guard was notified. 11:38 a.m. A caller requested a civil stand by at a Puget Island home. 2:26 p.m. The sheriff’s department received a referral from Adult Protective Services. 4:20 p.m. A caller complained that a neighbor on Puget Island was burning goat feces and hay and that it smelled awful. Dispatch studied the burn permit and notified the caller that there was nothing prohibiting the subject from burning those materials. 4:26 p.m. A caller became concerned about a small dog at a home on Middle Valley Road after witnessing a male hit the animal and drag it into the house by the collar.

January 16 — 9:50 a.m. A caller reported that a restraining order had been violated after a person had been seen taking a box from his Puget Island property. 10:11 a.m. A caller reported that an individual was slumped over the wheel of his vehicle on an Elochoman Valley Road. A deputy made contact. There were no signs of intoxication. The person said he was sleeping. 2:02 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an individual in Cathlamet with a three inch laceration on his leg caused by a wheelchair. The person refused transport to the hospital. 3:45 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported that some prescription drugs had been stolen.

January 17 — 6:44 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance provided a lift assist to an Elochoman Valley resident who was too weak to get out of her chair. She refused transport to the hospital. 9:55 p.m. An East Sunny Sands resident said that a neighbor’s dogs had attacked and injured her dog. A deputy spoke with both parties and no action was taken at that time. 12:17 p.m. A caller reported that three men in a black truck were shooting ducks illegally on Puget Island. 2:42 p.m. A caller reported that three men who had been seen shooting ducks were hunting on a Puget Island property without the owner’s permission. 4:35 p.m. A caller requested a jump start for a car in a parking lot on Main Street.
