Sheriff's Report, October 1, 2020

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

September 20 — 1:39 a.m. A domestic disturbance was reported at a Cathlamet home. 6:15 a.m. Two horses in halters were found on East Valley Road. The owner was notified. 7:58 a.m. The Grays River ambulance aided a Grays River resident complaining of abdominal pain. 8:09 a.m. A Puget Island resident with a dog in heat asked the sheriff’s department to speak to a neighbor because his dogs kept coming into her yard. A deputy spoke with the neighbor, who turned out to be a housesitter. He said he did not realize the dogs would take off when he let them out; he would make sure they stayed on the property. 8:59 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident with vertigo. 9:18 a.m. A deputy spoke with a woman who was afraid to go home because, she said, the property manager would enter her apartment through a door that didn’t lock and he would not allow her to move out. A deputy tried to contact the landlord. 1:04 p.m. A caller said that a man told her he was leaving town; he was running for his life because two people were threatening to kill him. A deputy tried to contact the individual. 3:08 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported hearing a shot fired behind his property. 4:22 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a student who had not attended any Zoom classes for over a week. A deputy spoke with the student’s father, who said the youth broke his phone while camping and was currently out riding an ATV. The father and the student later visited the sheriff’s office to verify the story. 9:07 p.m. A Puget Island resident said his water pressure was fluctuating. The PUD was notified.

September 21 — 7:21 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance went to a home on Greenwood Road after a medical alarm was activated and the resident did not respond. It turned out to be an accidental activation. 9:30 a.m. A caller reported that a woman had found two small unattended children wandering in Cathlamet and had taken them home to find their mother sleeping. The woman who found the children said it was the third time that this had happened. A deputy contacted the mother. She said that her daughter was an escape artist. She had added a device to the dead bolt on the door, but the child started going out the window. Child Protective Services was notified but no further action was taken at that time. 11:03 a.m. A welfare check was requested for a student who had not contacted the school in two weeks. The father and student visited the sheriff’s office the night before and he appeared to be in good health, but did not have a working phone. No law enforcement was taken at that time. 11:20 a.m. A caller reported that large chip trucks were speeding on Cross Dike Road. He noted that he had seen the wheel of one of the trucks lift off the ground. 11:34 a.m. A caller witnessed a youth prying open a window to gain access to his parent’s Puget Island residence. A door then opened, the caller said, even though the father had been gone since Labor Day. 11:58 a.m. A caller said his girlfriend had taken their baby and was walking to her parent’s home in the Elochoman Valley area after they had gotten into a fight in the car over the radio. 12:02 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident with an infected wound. 1:07 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported that a neighbor’s dog was loose and had defecated on his driveway. 1:15 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident who was sick and experiencing pain from a recent fall. 3:12 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Rosedale resident who was having respiratory issues. 5:38 p.m. An east county resident reported that his girlfriend had struck him and attacked his daughter. Deputies and the Cathlamet ambulance responded. A woman was taken into custody.

September 22 — 12:44 a.m. A caller said that someone was throwing rocks at a vehicle on Columbia Street and yelling “No justice, no peace.” Deputies responded. A mental health professional was requested at 1 a.m and was on scene at 1:33 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded at 1:39 a.m. At 2:53 a.m., the caller said the woman had returned and was throwing rocks at her vehicle again and at the windows of the apartment building, which was bringing people outside to see what was going on. At 3 a.m., the caller said the woman had driven away yelling something about a crack pipe and a gun. At 3:23 a.m., the woman was advised that she was on private property and couldn’t be there. She said she would go home and not cause any more problems. 8:03 a.m. A Rosburg resident said that his son had been threatened. 10:03 a.m. A medical alarm was activated at a Cathlamet address. The resident was contacted and did not need assistance. 10:40 a.m. A caller reported finding mail belonging to Elochoman Valley residents in an illegal dump about nine miles up Elochoman Valley Road. A deputy was unable to locate where the garbage had been dumped and attempted to contact the person who found it to learn the precise location. 12:46 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that a political sign had been knocked down. 2:16 p.m. A Deep River resident reported hearing shots fired. 3:41 p.m. A representative from the mental health department followed up on a previous call to a Cathlamet residence. 8:43 p.m. The sheriff’s department was asked to be on the lookout for a vehicle stolen in Cowlitz County.

September 23 — 8:06 a.m. An east county resident reported getting threatening text messages from a work from home scam. 1:48 p.m. A caller reported rocks on SR 4 in the Nassa Point area. 4:02 p.m. An Alger Creek resident reported that he had received threatening text messages from a neighbor. He was advised that the messages did not meet the definition of criminal threats, but he asked to have the matter documented in case the situation escalated. 4:26 p.m. The PUD responded to a power outage at some homes near County Line Park. 5:41 p.m. Deputies and the Cathlamet ambulance aided an ailing Rosedale resident. 8:41 p.m. A caller asked for a welfare check after her daughter’s car broke down on SR 4 on KM and her phone died. She said that she had tried to call a tow truck, but was unable to make contact. She called back at 8:58 p.m. to say that she had gotten ahold of her daughter and she was okay. 10:15 p.m. A power outage was reported at several homes in Grays River. The PUD was notified. 10:39 p.m. A caller reported seeing two suspicious people in full face masks driving repeatedly around a Cathlamet neighborhood. Deputies responded and were unable to locate the people.

September 24 — 7:42 a.m. A school bus driver reported that a tree was down and blocking one lane of Beaver Creek Road. The county road department was notified. 8:21 a.m. A caller reported that a truck pulling a mobile home was blocking a road on Puget Island. 11:35 a.m. A caller reported finding two needles containing a black substance. 2:05 p.m. A caller reported that a vehicle traveling west on SR 4 in the Deep River area had moved into the eastbound lane, almost colliding with two other vehicles. 5:57 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported “piles of dog poop” in his driveway.

September 25 — 8:42 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that several campaign signs in the neighborhood had been stolen. 10:29 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that his political signs had been stolen. 10:53 a.m. Several more Puget Island residents reported stolen or damaged political signs. 12:07 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle on a county right of way on Seal River Road. A deputy responded and the owner was advised to move his vehicle. 12:39 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that her Kids at Play sign had been stolen. 1:05 p.m. A caller said he found a pile of campaign signs in the Elochoman Valley. 7:49 p.m. A caller reported that a no contact order had been violated.

September 26 — 11:03 a.m. Deputies and the Cathlamet ambulance responded to an address in Cathlamet to aid an individual who had fallen. He refused transport to the hospital. 11:14 a.m. A caller reported a large burn pile at a Puget Island address. He said when he told the person to put out the fire, the person screamed at him. The Puget Island Fire Department responded and determined it was a legal burn. 1:21 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to a Cathlamet residence to aid an individual with a shoulder injury. 4:19 p.m. A power outage was reported at an Elochoman Valley residence. The PUD was notified and had the power back on by 5:37 p.m. 4:24 p.m. A tree had fallen on an Elochoman Valley road, taking down a power line. Deputies, the Cathlamet Fire Department, and the PUD responded, The county road department was notified. 10:32 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident believed a babysitter had stolen something, but he could not identify any missing items. He was suspicious because she had moved a camera that he admitted he had set up in order to track her movements.

September 27 — 12:22 a.m. A caller reported that he had been threatened. 11:05 a.m. Deputies and the Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident complaining of lethargy. 11:52 a.m. Deputies and the Cathlamet ambulance aided a Puget Island resident who was unresponsive. 12:01 p.m. Several callers reported a large boulder on SR 4 near County Line Park. 12:25 p.m. A caller reported he had been threatened by someone regarding a float house he was repairing. 3:36 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported that someone was stealing their picket fencing. 5:09 p.m. A caller reported a car prowler in the Rosedale area.
