Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
To The Eagle:
I am grateful to Mike for making us feel welcome in a small town far from home. Headed to the Pacific Northwest where my parents lived since the early 70’s, we were greeted by Mike, exchanging stories and encouraged our decision to move was a good decision.
Mike is a doer (and gets it done!) and does not like to stand out when helping others. While volunteering, Mike initiated a food delivery program with the Lions Club, health department, school, and food banks for those vulnerable during the Covid-19. He helped deliver groceries and meals to families. Mike coordinated the Hunger Task Force, which provides meats to the food banks. The task force helps local farmers and people navigate the processing of the food, packaging, and donation to the food banks. When talking to Mike, you would never know the many contributions he has made to this community, unless you asked him directly about a situation.
I have learned, if you give Mike an idea, he can get it done. Mike’s committed to keeping our young people in Cathlamet and partnering with agencies to provide training and employment opportunities for our community. Mike saw that Johnson Park needed upgrading and coordinated getting heaters installed to provide a comfortable place of gathering for the Westend. Mike has donated countless hours of service to the fair, 4-H, donating food, and cooking for the Covered Bridge dinner and the fair. He recruits volunteers to work beside him. Mike’s experience benefits Cathlamet, keeping the hometown atmosphere. Mike’s straightforward approach, communicating directly is the best approach. Vote for Mike Backman, County Commissioner.
