Voters favor O'Connor, Wainwright, Richter

In an election with low turnout, voters in Wahkiakum and Pacific counties joined others across the state in deciding few contested races and showing their will on statewide issues.

In one of the few contested local races, Bill Wainwright defeated Janis Dodrill 76-42 in a race for a position on the Cathlamet Town Council.

In another contested local race, incumbent Brian O'Connor held off challenger Austin Smith in a race for a seat on the Port District 2 board of commissioners, 241-166.

In a contested race for Pacific/Wahkiakum Superior Court Judge, incumbent Donald J. Richter edged challenger Michael S. Turner 2,569-2,415. Richter carried the Wahkiakum County vote 492-391.

Wahkiakum County has 3,227 registered voters; as of Tuesday, election officials counted 999 ballots, a 30.96% turnout. More ballots will be counted this week as they arrive in the mail.

In voting on statewide measures, Wahkiakum voting results agreed with the statewide results.

Voters approved 55.4% Initiative 976, which would limit taxes on vehicle registrations and make a standard fee of $30 per registration.

Voters rejected by 51.2% Referendum 88 which would allow the state to implement certain affirmative action measures.

Voters approved by 65.2% a proposed amendment to the state constitution, Senate Joint Resolution 8200, which would give the legislature certain powers during times of catastrophic emergencies.

Voters locally and statewide had 12 non-binding advisory issues from the legislature; they favored repealing nine various taxation measures. They favored maintaining a tax on vapor products, a tax on certain non-residents, and an increase in Business & Occupation Tax on certain travel agents and tour operators.
