Three Wahkiakum athletes and 18 students from Naselle High School are headed to the 1B, 2B, 1A State Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington University in Cheney this week. The event begins today and ends on Saturday.
At the 2B District 4 Championship at W.F. West High School in Chehalis last Friday, three Mules qualified for state competition. Boys had to finish in the top six places and girls had to place in the top seven. The Mules took 19th place in team competition with one point, and 15th in girls competition with 17 points.
Jansi Merz is headed to state after taking second place in the discus with a throw of 111-06. Charlie Ashe will compete in the 300 meter hurdles after taking fifth place in the event at district with a time of 51.13. Finally, Mckensi Fluckiger qualified after taking seventh place in the triple jump with a leap of 32-01.5.
The Naselle Comets hosted the District 4 1B Track Championships last Wednesday. Boys had to finish in the top three and girls had to place in the top two to qualify for state. In team competition, the Comet boys took first place with 173 points, and the girls took first place with 126 points.
