Mules 2nd at district golf, head to state tournament

The 2019 league champion Wahkiakum Mules failed to retain the district championship trophy and now will have to set their sights on a possible state trophy.

Life Christian shot 72.5 to claim the district title. Wahkiakum had 63, Ilwaco 53.5, Kalama 22 and Adna 6.

Three Mules punched their ticket to State: Tyler St. Onge shot 168 as individual runner-up; Logan LaBerge 178 for fifth place, and Zach Johnston hit 180 and finished sixth. Finishing 14th out of 30 places but not qualifying for state was William Guitron, 201, scoring seven team points for the Mules.

The Mules were a little disappointed that they didn’t repeat but had to accept the fact that Life Christian, who gave the Mules their only loss of the season, had more help from the back end of their line-up and that was the difference. Only the teams that have more than one player finish day two at state can qualify for the team event and hardware. LCA is sending four players, and the Mules are sending three. Ilwaco will be sending two-time state champion and this year’s District 4 champ Blake Kukula, 139, as their sole entry, and Kalama will be sending freshman Todd Tabor, 182, eighth place, as their sole entry.

The Class 2B/1B State Tournament by some stroke of good fortune will also be at a Tumwater Valley GC. The Mules will have six days to get ready to tee it up at State on May 21-22. See you then!
