Mules sweep Vikes

Without skipping a beat, the Wahkiakum High School baseball team returned from spring break to beat Mossyrock twice in a double header on Tuesday.

The Mules beat the Vikings 4-1 in the first game.

Ashden Niemeyer started the game on the mound. He faced nine hitters and struck out three and walked three in two innings. Brody Carlson provided relief, facing 15 batters in a little over three innings. He struck out five and walked four, allowing one hit and one run. James Anderson closed the game, striking out five of the final six batters in the last two innings.

On offense, Quentin Nelson, Anderson, and Niemeyer all drove in a run.

The Mules won the nightcap in five innings, 15-1.

Luke Brown hit a triple and drove in four runs. Niemeyer hit a double and had five RBIs. Brody Carlson drove in two runs. Tristan Collupy had two RBIs. Nelson and Damion Curl had one RBI apiece.

Curl was the starting pitcher. He faced 15 batters in three innings, striking out four and walking two while allowing two hits and one run. Anderson closed out the game, pitching two innings and striking out six of seven batters. He walked one.

“We are giving a lot of free passes still and it will be hard to win close games if we can’t button that up,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “Offense in the second game was great and we had a lot more fun which is crucial to momentum.”

A change to the schedule has the Mules facing Kalama at home in a double header beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday.
