Mules fall 55-0 to Kalama

The Kalama Chinook football team ran over the depleted Wahkiakum Mules for a 55-0 River Division victory last Friday night.

Injury problems have hurt the Mules; in the past week they lost two starters to leg injuries and had a third taken from Friday's game for a head injury assessment.

"We finished the game with two seniors, one junior and the rest underclassmen on the field," said Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "The season has been brutal."

In effect, the Mules had a junior varsity team playing the third ranked Class 2B team in the state.

Kalama piled up 299 yards rushing and gained another 185 in the year. They led 21-0 after one quarter, 41-0 at halftime and added a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters.

The Mules managed just 26 yards rushing and 23 in the air. Brady Johns was the leading rusher with 16. Quarterback Lucas Brown completed three of eight passes for 23 yards with two interceptions. Chance Cothen gained 16 yards on two catches, and KC Beery caught one for seven yards.

The 3-5 Mules head to Winlock this Friday to take on the 3-5 Cardinals in a battle that will decide third and fourth place in the Central League's River Division.

In the November 1 cross over games, the winner will travel to the second place finisher in the Coastal Division, probably Raymond, and the loser will take on the Coastal Division champion, probably Pe Ell/Willapa Valley.
