Retain Sheriff Howie

To The Eagle:

I met Sheriff Mark Howie when the then-Sheriff John Dearmore brought him onto the sheriff’s office while trying to restore our sorely depleted sheriff’s office. When we were down to four deputies and down a corrections officer, and had no emergency manager for our county, Sheriff Howie pulled every available string for funds including state monies.

We now have six deputies and a full staff in the 911/corrections center.

For years we had no realistic night shift; a deputy had to be called out thus amassing a horrible overtime expense to the county.

Sheriff Howie is a true member of the community. He owns a home in Cathlamet and a business, all of which he owned prior to working for the sheriff’s office. Mark has brought our sheriff’s office into the 21st century ie: bringing back Citizen’s Police Academy, starting up new block watches, being active in the schools and preschools, better staffing levels, newer and safer patrol cars, upgraded communications, more training for staff, a full time emergency manager funded with grants, and more patrol visibility and community policing to name a few. Mark and his wife are true citizens of Wahkiakum County.

We cannot do better than to retain Mark Howie as our sheriff.
