Jodie Mason (left) and Duncan Cruickshank (right) from the Wahkiakum County EMS and Trauma Council presented Wahkiakum County Port 1 Assistant Manager Todd Souvenir (center) with solar lights on Monday morning at the Elochoman Slough Marina.
The council receives money each year for injury prevention. Traditionally, they use the funds to purchase car seats and booster seats, or life jacket boards, which can be found at Vista Park, Hornstra Beach, and County Line Park.
Prompted by a tragedy in February, when a man fell from his boat in the marina at night and lost his life, the council approached the port staff to see how they could help keep this from happening again. The council decided to purchase the solar lights, which will be installed on the dock ladders around the marina to make them more visible at night.
"I'm glad we were able to do this," Mason said.
