WSP sergeant reports accidents, contacts

Troopers in the Washington State Patrol responded to 41 collisions in Wahkiakum County in 2017, Sgt. Brad Moon reported Tuesday.

Troopers also made 1,582 contacts with motorists in the county, Moon said.

The largest number of collisions, 12, occurred in the Cathlamet area. There were seven between Cathlamet and Skamokawa, and seven between Skamokawa and Grays River.

Five occurred in the Nassa Point area, three each in the Grays River and Rosburg areas, and two each near Deep River and the Cowlitz County line.

The largest number of collisions, nine, occurred in February. There were five in December, four each in April, August and November, and three each in March, May, June, July and September. Troopers responded to no collisions in January and October.

Officers from the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department also responded to collisions when troopers weren't available or that occurred on county roads.

The bulk of the troopers' 1,582 traffic stops, 364, occurred in Elochoman Flats area north of Cathlamet. Another 292 occurred near the Cowlitz County line, 199 around Deep River, 173 in the Cathlamet area, 111 around Nassa Point, 82 near Grays River and 79 on Puget Island.

Most of the contacts,1,046, were for speeding; 249 were for assists.
