Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
The United States Postal Service Highway Contract Route (HCR) Division has awarded the fourth contract in the 82 year history of the “Skamokawa to Pillar Rock” contract route to Shelby Hoiland, a Cathlamet resident. The route consists of delivering the mail to the rural addresses originating from the Skamokawa and Grays-River Post Offices.
There have been only four contractors awarded this route; Frank Faymonville, Hermina Carroll, Sharyl Iblngs and now Shelby. In past transitions to the next carrier, it was hardly noticed as Hermina and Sharyl were the relief carriers. This time will be slightly different.
Shelby is starting without prior knowledge of the households on her new route, yet she is an experienced postal carrier and knows what it takes to learn her postal patrons. Shelby worked in the Portland District as a USPS employed carrier delivering much larger volume routes and was promoted to a supervisor before moving to our area. She understands postal service rules, delivery challenges, and friendships that develop when delivering the mail. Shelby has studied the maps, listened to local advice concerning road conditions and driven the route repeatedly. She is confident and excited about starting on Monday, April 2.
Shelby is managed by the Highway Contract Division in Denver, Colorado with day-to-day mail delivery overseen by the Cathlamet Post Office. Please welcome her to the Cathlamet Post Office mail delivery team. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Cathlamet Postmaster Wendy Blix at 360-795-3619.
